Course Summary

An operations manager has a significant part to play in the success of a business: they wear many hats, and shoulder a lot of responsibility. One day they may be managing finances and implementing policies and procedures, the next they could be analysing data and making important marketing decisions. It’s a position that requires a varied skill set, and comes with the opportunity to have a really strong impact. An operations/departmental manager is someone who manages teams and/or projects, and achieving operational or departmental goals and objectives, as part of the delivery of the organisations strategy. They are accountable to a more senior manager or business owner. Working in the private, public or third sector and in all sizes of organisation, specific responsibilities and job titles will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same. Key responsibilities may include creating and delivering operational plans, managing projects, leading and managing teams, managing change, financial and resource management, talent management, coaching and mentoring.

  • Individual employers will determine the entry criteria, but this will typically include:

    - GCSEs grade C/4 or above in maths & English.

    - Other relevant qualifications or experience.

    - Recent experience and knowledge of managing teams and projects.

    - Must hold a current senior management position.

    You have to be aged 16 years or over and must be working in the Digital sector for at least 30 hours a week.

    You also need to be a resident in England and not in full-time education.

    Candidates who have not achieved maths, English and ICT skills at Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE Grade C/4 or above) prior to commencing their training, will need to achieve this before taking their end-point assessment.

At any given point, you’ll find them juggling a range of tasks so patience, leadership and problem-solving skills are a must in this role.

  • Operation Managers will cover every nook and cranny of the business, so expect varied work with almost every department in the company. You’ll work under a more senior manager and/or business owner, and it’ll be their job to bring you up to speed on how each aspect of the business operates.

    Your day-to-day will include but is not limited to:

    • Attending meetings with senior managers and other employees

    • Reviewing and analysing data (usually data relating to performance)

    • Helping plan schedules and manage resources

    • Assisting in developing strategies to increase revenue and reduce costs

    • Responding to customer inquiries

    • Helping to prepare reports and presentations

    To achieve final certification, the apprentice must pass their End-Point Assessment (EPA).

    A pass in the EPA will demonstrate that the Apprentice can apply the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the standard.
